Wavy Turban Snail
Wavy Turban Snail (Lithopoma undosum) ~ Wavy turban snails have a circular exterior shell with wavy undulating ridges and can reach up to 6 inches in diameter. The shell of this slow moving snail is often encrusted with algae and/or other invertebrates. The snails can be found alone or in small groups and use their foot to move from rock to rock in order to feed upon kelp and microscopic algae. This snail is heavily harvested by divers and commerical sea urchin harvesters. Other than prohibiting the harvesting of any small species within 1,000 feet of the low tide mark on shore, California has virtually no regulations governing the harvesting of this species for their meat (foot) and shell (butto0ns).
