Variegated amphissa (Amphissa
versicolor) ~ This snail is common among
algae and under rocks; it grows to a length of 17 mm. It
has axial ridges that run at a slant and crossed by fine,
close-set spiral cords. The color varies including
white, gray, yellow and brown. The snail can be
mottled or have dark spiral lines. A.
versicolor
is the more common species in parts of California. These
snails are scavengers. the eggs are about 2 mm in diameter
and are laid in small helmet-shaped capsules. |
