California Sea Hare (Aplysia californica) ~ This nudibranch gets its name from the pair of antennae which resemble a hare's ears.  The California sea hare is an herbivore that grazes on algae and eelgrass.  They can grow up to 16 inches and weigh up to 30 pounds.  Each sea hare is both male and female but still needs to mate.  Cool Note!  When threatened or irritated, it can release a dark purple ink-like fluid in defense.  The ink gets it purple color from a pigment in the red algae in its diet.  They cannot "see" like humans; they can only tell light from dark.
